I Think They Want Me
In an alternate timeline this is the song that became a hit, got used in a car commercial, and eventually became a profitable load-stone we could never remove from the set. Like many missed opportunities in my life I am keenly aware of the nightmare possibility of the path not taken.
It’s not like we didn’t try to push this song. It’s the only one from these sessions that would end up on the “Porch Music” CD, most likely because it was such a raucous and popular closing song in our set and, as with “The Wrong Side Of Town”, because it was easy.
I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Mostly embarrassed.
It’s ostensibly a song about buying a car, something I did with a big chunk of the money I made from “A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master” but looking back now it’s actually about the baffled arrogance that would eventually sink me in so many ways.
I was loving the attention AND it made me suspicious of those who were giving it to me. In retrospect I may have been better off if I was more suspicious of my own self-sabotaging motivations but that takes time and I was 21 years old with a whole lotta mistakes yet to make.
Lyrics
I THINK THEY WANT ME
I think that they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
I think they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
And I don’t know if I can afford another toy
but I fancy myself a modern Buddha boy
and I don’t know if I can afford to eat tonight
but I know that I’m gonna be alright, OK
I think that they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
I think they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
And I don’t know maybe I’m too naive
Maybe the salesman’s got something up his sleeve
but everything looks alright to me
Tell me sir, how much will that be?
But when they told me ’bout the price
I had to laugh
They might be laughing too
And I signed the paper
hopped down the path
of righteousness to you
I think that they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
I think they want me
I think that they want me
I think that they want me to be their friend
And I don’t know maybe you were right
Maybe I got taken for a ride tonight
but then I drive up to you in this piece of trash
Uh-uh I can’t worry
about no cash…
