Drug War
This potent little protest track owes its punch to Marshall Thompson who engineered the session and whose organ part gives the song its signature opening and it’s rhythmic hook.
We’d play this songs at many rallies to legalize marijuana over the years, and record a full band in 1999 for a project Craig X Rubin was organizing.
Lyrics
DRUG WAR
Yup dup dodio dup dup do’dodio…
Wire taps on your phone
What have you done?
In the privacy of your own home
What have you done?
Our record reveal that you’ve been having too much fun
and that ain’t right
in the new world reich
or in a drug war
because that’s what we’ve been calling it
a drug war
Because everyone’s a commie in a drug war
and we’ve been running low on Commie’s since the Cold War
so that’s what we’re calling it now
Well your high school friend went bump in the night
What has he done?
For twenty years under a prison light
What has he done?
Twenty Z’s in Dallas
and he wasn’t white
Is that all that counts
One year
One ounce
in a drug war
because that’s what we’ve been calling it a drug war
because everyone’s a Commie in a drug war
and we’ve been running low on Commie’s since the Cold War
Yeah but everyone’s a Commie in a drug war
and everyone’s a hoodlum in a drug war
and everyone’s a Jew in a drug war
I hope that they don’t come for you in a drug war
Hope that they do not nuke me in this drug war
because that’s what they’re calling it now.
Practice your goose step dodio -dup dup d’dodio…
