You Moved To Chicago

I wrote this song when I was in high school as an attempt at a Lowell George or Mose Allison type song. As a teenager “You Moved To Chicago” was precocious but its lack of maturity, compared with the rest of the songs on the record is painfully evident.

I really probably should have done this song with The Previous. It would have fit really well on “The Wrong Side of Town” album with Billy Lincoln on guitar. I probably held onto it hoping I’d become a good enough guitar player to play it like Lowell George some day. That day has yet to come. This version has no guitar whatsoever.

One of the musical touchstones I sent to Ford for the record was Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” album and I feel like that gets expressed on this track with the big keyboards and Samantha Parton of The Be Good Tanyas doing her best version of Bonnie Raitt.

Lyrics

You Moved To Chicago

You’re chocolate cake
and she’s just the crumbs
You are a dozen long stemmed roses and she’s
three wilted mums
You’re champagne on ice
and she’s just warm flat beer
but you moved to Chicago
and she’s still here
Yeah you moved to Chicago
and she’s…
she’s…
She’s still here

You’re just plain great
and she’s just plain
You got a
brilliant mind
She’s just got a
mushy old brain
In view
of her front
I believe I prefer your rear
But(t)
you moved to Chicago
and she’s still here
Yeah you moved to Chicago
and she’s…
She’s still here.

She’s still…
She’s still…
She’s still…
She’s still here

Well if you’d move
back to Boston
you’d have nothin’ to fear
you would have nothin’ to fear but
you moved to Chicago
and she’s still here
Yeah, you moved to Chicago
and she’s still here
Yeah you moved to Chicago
and she’s…
she’s…
She’s still here
