The Wrong Side of Town
I wrote this song the night I saw “Do The Right Thing”.
Because of it’s repetitive chord structure it was an easy one to include in the set if we were breaking in a new musician, which was pretty regularly, and this led to it remaining in the set right up to the band’s most recent shows. Sometimes being easy is better than being good, at least as far as songs go.
I think I may have played the trumpet in the studio. In fact, I’m pretty sure I did. It’s not a very skilled part.
I don’t like the line about sending your cash to “Bangladash” anymore. Aid for people around the world who suffer because of policies that benefit US corporations is not at odds with the people suffering because of the policies of those same entities in the US.
Today I’d say…
Forget the GOP and the DNC
we need solidarity…
on the wrong side of town
Lyrics
THE WRONG SIDE OF TOWN
My neighborhood has a reputation
My neighborhood hasn’t got a lot else
We’ve got bars on all of the windows
a bar down every street
Stars and bars on this flag o’ ours
but it won’t buy me no food to eat
on the wrong side of town
on the wrong side of town
on the wrong side of town
That’s where I live
My neighborhood serves its purpose
My neighborhood is a local zoo
And we are all the animals
raggedy and plain
You can send you cash to Bangladesh
but we will still remain
on the wrong side of town
on the wrong side of town
on the wrong side of town
That’s where I live
My neighborhood is not where I come from
My neighborhood is not all that I know
Cause I have been to Amsterdam
and I’ve sailed the open sea
And I know if you don’t give a damn
the whole world’s gonna be
on the wrong side of town
