The Webpage of Dorian Gray

In 1997 when I wrote and recorded this song, websites were still a novel concept, but not as novel as the mp3 format which had just come out. As a gimmick I sold floppy discs with the mp3 of the song on them for one dollar at my shows that year.

The idea of a movie updating the Dorian Gray story, making it about a website instead of a portrait was a pretty nifty idea, and since I wasn’t making movies I turned the concept into a song.

This was my first solo production on my new Tascam 8 Track that Josh Clayton-Felt reccomended I get for my home recordings and I’m very happy with the way it came out.

Lyrics

THE WEBPAGE OF DORIAN GRAY

He may look like an advertisement
for the brave unconscious way
That’s what I thought too ’til I went
to the webpage of Dorian Gray

It’s the webpage of Dorian Gray
It ain’t no different today
than the pic in the book
by that guy who was gay

That’s the address that I go to log on
to the site where all his demons play
on the webpage of Dorian Gray

It’s the webpage of Dorian Gray
It ain’t no different today
than the pic in the book
by that guy who was gay

It’s the webpage of Dorian Gray
designed by his good friend Trey
who disavows all connection
with that address today

It’s on the webpage of Dorian Gray
It’s the webpage of Dorian Gray

It’s like the links
go on forever
endless rivers of youth decay
I caught a glimpse
and then a power surge severed
my connection
to the webpage of Dorian Gray

The webpage of Dorian Gray
It was there and was gone
and then nothing came up
when I tried to log on
to the webpage of Dorian Gray
It just works that way
and now no one believes
a word that I say

‘Bout the webpage of Dorian Gray
about the webpage of Dorian Gray

Well, I may look like an advertisement
for a life that’s gone astray
That’s what I thought too ’til I went
to the webpage of Dorian Gray

The webpage of Dorian Gray

It’s the webpage of Dorian Gray
It ain’t no different today
than the pic in the book
by that guy who was wild…
