The Sun (with Josh Clayton-Felt)
Josh Clayton-Felt was enjoying the exciting aftermath of the hit single “Three Strange Days” from his band School Of Fish when he joined me in the studio to record this song. He’d never heard it before and we worked it out for about half an hour with him playing an open tuned acoustic, Marshall Thompson recording and playing keyboards, and Clay Goldstein on harmonica.
Josh and I always had a great blend but the way this came together still seems miraculous to me.
Appropriately, “The Sun” has the vibe of a children’s song. Josh and I met as kids, and childhood and its loss were a prevalent theme in his songwriting. This wasn’t the last time Josh and I recorded together. We recorded a demo to pitch to the film “That Thing You Do” but most people have never heard it so this is is effectively the closest thing to a final song from The Boon, which may not mean much to you but it means everything to me.
Back in the days of full albums and sides, this would have been the beginning of side two.
Lyrics
The Sun
I could wake up in the morning
and I’d wake up everyone
I would wake up everyone just to see the sun and
I could sail across the ocean
I could sail across the sea
Sailing for a shore of yore
where there is more
honey
Sunny
Sonny
I could wake up in the morning
and I’d wake up everyone
I would wake up everyone just to see the sun
