Shout

I wrote the line “I fell in love at a rally” months before attending a rally and falling in love with Heidi Love, whose presence was immediately felt in the band. She and Marshall Thompson, our new keyboardist, joined me on our first tour as I basically forced my way onto Clan Dyken’s “Nobody For President” tour in ’92 with Woodstock legend Wavy Gravy after we all attended the Healing Global Wounds event at The Nevada Nuclear Test Site. We wrapped it all up playing a gig in front of George Bush’s White House the day Bill Clinton was elected.

The track has its own synchronicity. It was the first one we recorded in the studio on day 1 of 7 we had booked in Mary’s Danish’s rehearsal studio. All in all it might be my favorite performance I’ve ever recorded and, just as in the case of “What’s Wrong With The Mirror” it features a freakishly perfectly timed phone call, almost interrupting the take. If you listen close, as the last note fades, you’ll hear the phone ring. That’s our manager Ty Braswell informing us that the city is about to erupt in the wake of the “Rodney King verdict” and telling us to get the hell out of there, advice most of the band took, well, all of them, except me. I stayed the night and returned the next day. Why? You may ask. I guess because even though people often thought of us as a political band, I always saw us as an historical band. That night, and many others, I made choices that felt historically correct in ways that only history, such as it is, can judge.

Lyrics

SHOUT

If you’ve got a problem
you better let somebody know
’cause the squeaky wheel may not get the grease
but at least it gets heard
So I…SHOUT

I fell in love at a rally
The good fight sure was fun
Life would be such a bore
if I agreed with everyone
So I…SHOUT

Well I’ve got a button
and when you push it I’m gonna shout
Keep on pushing my buttons
’til I figure you out
C’mon and make me…
SHOUT
