Record Store
I wrote “Record Store” in the weeks following Tom Petty’s death and it feels like a Heartbreakers song to me.
The song tells my story in Olympia. I was on the radio at KAOS in Olympia hosting Radio8Ball for 10 years until events at The Evergreen State College which I document in my book “Accidental Initiations: In The Kabbalistic Tree of Olympia” (from Sync Book Press), led to an abrupt end for me there.
The people who regularly tuned in to hear the show were told lies about why the show was ending, and the station management sought to have me banned from the campus I grew up on when my father was a professor there in the 1970’s.
This was the second song I worked on for “Recognize, De-escalate & De-code” and it is the one most directly aimed at my hometown and its inhabitants.
Mischa Livingstone shot the music video in Olympia, particularly at Lantern Records beneath The Martin apartments where I lived for 12 years.
Lyrics
RECORD STORE
My town’s still got a record store
You don’t see many of ‘em ‘round no more
I used to be on the radio
Yeah Yeah
Synchronicity
Yeah Yeah
Baby you and me
Every Tuesday night from 6 to 8
we would chaotically congregate
Yeah but the boring haters couldn’t wait
Yeah Yeah
for synchronicity baby
Yeah Yeah
Thinkin’ you and me maybe
Gotta recognize, de-escalate and de-code
“What’s that?”, you ask…
Is my town still a community?
Yeah Yeah
Well maybe hypothetically
I used to be on the radio
yeah yeah
with synchronicity baby
yeah yeah
Thinkin’ you and me maybe
Gotta recognize, de-escalate and de-code this situation
Otherwise might as well kiss goodbye to our radio station
Recognize, de-escalate and de-code this situation
I’m talking ‘bout the truth and the reconciliation
Mandela style
Yeah Yeah
My town has still got a record store
Yeah Yeah
My town has still got a record store
Yeah Yeah
My town has still got a record store
with synchronicity baby
yeah, yeah
thinkin’ you and me…
My town has still got a record store
