Put Him Up
I wrote this song about my younger brother Gabriel who, having watched me go directly from high school to a film career and this all-star band, decided to take the life as art game to a whole next level and was traveling in Europe as a professional busker which, to some degree, he remains to this day. At the time I was worried for him and this is the song that emerged from an improvisation with Billy.
So, for those keeping track, we have allusions to my father (the harmonica), my mother (Billy Lincoln’s name) and now this song about my brother. Although I can’t claim to be sure of any of this, I am almost positive none of it was intentional. And yet, from this distance I can see the impulse to build a family out of my music, which makes sense. Considering how things turned out, this may explain why I took so much time off when things finally fell apart in the blast zone of the millennium.
The guy singing these songs was unaware of everything except the next gig. He thought he was singing about his brother. He had no idea the beggar he would become.
Lyrics
PUT HIM UP
Put him up
Put him up
He will stay
out of your way
So put him up
Put him up
for one night and day
Put him up
Put him up
He can’t pay
but he’s on his way
So put him up
Put him up
for one night and day
And if the water runs
true for everyone
someday you’ll be re-paid
He will stay
out of your way
So put him up
Put him up
for one night and day
