My Baby Left Me For A Spider

I wrote this song for a project Dan Bern organized at The Iguana Cafe.

“My Baby Left Me For A Spider” is goofy little exercise that has no business being on the record compared to better songs I’d written at the time, but once again, something that was easier to remember and more fun for the band to play live won out. I don’t even particularly regret it. When you’ve got a young band that’s this good it’d be a shame not to just totally turn them loose at least once.

The song does introduce a character who was a big part of our Hollywood history. Margo M was named after film producer Margo Romero who came to nearly all of our LA shows back then and with whom I became great friends over the years. She would later cast me as the lead in “Hurricane Festival” with Derek Mears.

Lyrics

MY BABY LEFT ME FOR A SPIDER

My baby left me for a spider
well he crawled in through the crack
He wriggled and he tiggled and he jiggled inside her
Got my baby on her back
and she’s never coming back

Had a date with Miss Muffett
I was going to hold her hand
but when I saw the empty tuffet
I began to understand
Began to understand

That little Miss Muffet’s got a mind of her own now
Little Miss Muffet is full grown now
and how…

My baby left me for a spider
He just could not resist the thrill
He crept right up sat right down beside her
and moved in for the kill
as spiders often will

‘Cause little Miss Muffet’s got a mind of her own now
Little Miss Muffet is full grown now
and how…

Little Miss Muffett
sat on her tuffett
eating her curds and whey
along came a spider and sat down beside her and frightened Miss Muffett
(Frightened Miss Muffett)
Frightened Miss Muffett
(Frightened Miss Muffett)
Frightened Miss Muffett way…

All rise
All rise
All rise for the lies

Got a post card from Bermuda
signed love and kisses
Margo M
She met and married a barracuda
Moved into his aquarium
and the spider?

Aw she buried him.

Why?

Because little Miss Muffet’s got a mind of her own now
Little Miss Muffet is full grown now
and how…
