Remember walking into your scariest day of school?

I remember the moment this song came together. I was in some living room somewhere in the valley with Brian Schey and Marshall Thompson, just noodling away on the guitar the way we now noodle on our phones when it all clicked into place. The chords that never really stop modulating. The lyrics that express, as accurately as I ever have, the weird narcissistic tension that has plagued and motivated me for almost as long as I can remember. Maybe you’ve felt this way too.

“Get Normal”is not like previous Previous songs. It isn’t an easy number with cool solos. Nor was it particularly fun initially. It was the first time I took this much charge of the band, arrangement-wise, forcing them to play distinct parts as opposed to working it out live and trying to capture that in the studio. In the end they mostly bought in but it was a rough go at first.

Once they did buy in, as you can hear, the band outdid themselves, shining in service of a song that defines UnPop…
