Don’t Feed The Animals

“Don’t Feed The Animals” has two tributaries.

It was written the night I didn’t get the Jason Priestley role in “Beverly Hills 90210” for which I had just gone to network, the final stage of casting on a network show. I have many regrets but this is not one of them. I never watched the show but it would have been a serious life changer. I think I prefer my life but that night I needed to lash out/in and this song is the scar.

The musical inspiration was Elvis Costello’s “Uncomplicated” from the Blood & Chocolate album although the band’s performance is marked by a less controlled more youthful expression. You can hear Elvis’s influence on my vocals throughout this record.

Particularly on the next song.

Lyrics

DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS

I don’t wanna look at no bright side
I’m not in the mood
and living here under a landslide
has given me an attitude
I know tomorrow morning
it’ll all seem years away
but tomorrow morning
don’t mean shit to me today

All right!
All right
Don’t feed the animals
All right
All right?
Don’t feed the animals tonight!

I don’t see no silver lining
in the clouds that are over me
and I don’t feel much like smiling
I’m my own worst enemy
I wouldn’t get too close now
unless you’re willing to pay the price
I’m not being morose
I’m just giving you some good advice

All right
All right!
Don’t feed the animals
All right
All right?
Don’t feed the animals tonight!

You’re too much the beauty
and I’m too much the beast
and you don’t need to make it your duty
to wind up as my feast
Most of the time I’m so friendly
in fact I’m a fucking saint
but if you think tonight is the most of the time
I got news for you, it ain’t

All right
All right!
Don’t feed the animals
All right
All right?
Don’t feed the animals tonight!
