You Better Love Me

This one is special to me. It does everything I want a song to do.

It flips its meaning throughout. It contains lines that embarass me because they are so idealistic (“You better love me no matter what you think of me”) to ones that embarass me because they are so harsh (“I hate you like I hate my family”). In fact, since I have the space here I do want to say that this line doesn’t mean I hate my family but there is a way we all hate our families sometime, and that’s the complexity this line is about.

I wish we’d got a better take of this song. In fact, I have plans to record it again for a future project.

Lyrics

YOU BETTER LOVE ME

Well I was sitting somewhere
on the planet Earth
when a guy sat down beside me
and he…
he took up too much air
He was a waste of birth
He was the kind of guy I might be if I weren’t
so cool
and didn’t have a clue
and I talked too loud
and only talked about myself but
I’m nothing like that
No I’m nothing like that
No I’m Nothing like that
I told him and he said,
“You better love me
No matter what you think of me
Do it do it for yourself”
I said,
“Whaddya mean?
Love you?
You’re everything I disdain despise and hate”
That’s the word
Hate’s the word
I hate you like I hate my family and he said,
“You better love me
No matter what you think of me
Do it for yourself”

Well now Mr. Love
He’s long gone
Mr. Love is way good riddance ’cause
the world just weren’t
big enough
for the two of us
so now there’s just me and you
and you better love me
no matter what you think of me
do it for yourself…
Do it. Do it. Now….
