“Fine”
I remember writing this song. It’s kind of a shameful breakthrough but it was the first time I’d written a song from a place of compassion for someone else, as opposed to simply trying to express my own feelings, frustrations and fancies. This led to songs like “To And Fro” and “Put Him Up“
I don’t want to embarrass the friend I wrote it about but, just as with “You Won’t” I am sure it was as much a projection of my own shadow as a genuine insight into how fine she was. The song’s not even that compassionate. In fact it’s pretty accusatory and condescending on its face but when I wrote it I was thinking about someone other than myself, someone I cared about, and this unlocked something for me that was a big lesson as an artist. Since we can’t help but write about ourselves the question is where we will put our attention, and how.
Lyrics
“FINE”
Well you told me that you were “fine”
Yes you told me that you were “fine
but I don’t believe you
No not a single word
I could tell that you were lying to me
I could tell that you weren’t “fine”
Then you told me
that nothing was wrong
Yes you told me
nothing was a wrong
But I don’t believe you
No not a single word
And I knew it all along
Yes I knew it all along
Well you told me that you were “fine”
Yes you told me that you were “fine
but I don’t believe you
No not a single word
I could tell that you were lying to me
I could tell that you’d been crying
No you weren’t “fine”…
