You Won’t

PRO: This record does not let up and this song definitely keeps the energy going. Billy and Clay are both well-featured. I particularly love Billy’s backing vocals on the bridge, and the drums work better on the rockier numbers like this than on the quieter songs which might have benefited from more space. This was as much an issue of the production style of the time as Michael G’s performance, but it’s not an issue here.

CON: This is a kind of song I wrote a lot of. Finger pointing songs, I call ’em. Thing about finger-pointing songs is they always come back at you. I’m pretty sure I wrote this about my friend Wayne Nirenberg. He’s the guy in the baseball cap in the band photo. By the time we took the shot Michael G. Silvester had moved on so I had Wayne stand in as a joke nobody would ever get. Until now!

Wayne and I were in a high school band together (The Flying Fish) and we basically moved out to LA together. It’s a long story, one worthy of telling, but it has nothing to do with this song except that I was projecting my own shadow onto him in the moments I was writing it and I doubt I even told him he was the subject/target although, considering my motor mouth at the time, I probably did.

Sorry Wayne.

Lyrics

YOU WON’T

Well you said that you were sorry
but you still left a scar
and you’d do it again
to your closest friend
That’s just the way that you are

Well you can say that you’re heart is breaking
with a lump in your throat
Say that you’re up for changing
and know that you won’t
No, no you won’t

Well for someone who does so much thinkin’
ya give such little thought
to the things that you do
and who you’re doing ’em to
until the moment you get caught

Well you can say that you’re heart is breaking
with a lump in your throat
Say that you’re up for changing
and know that you won’t
No, no you won’t

And the one time that you do…well you don’t
And the one time that you do…
The one time that you do…you don’t

There is nothing that is quite so dangerous
as a well-intentioned fool
He will talk about a previous engagement
while you’re drowning in the pool

Well you say that you’re heart is breaking
with a lump in your throat
Say that you’re up for changing
and know that you won’t
No, no you won’t
