Natalie Wood said…

I wrote this song in the Chicago apartment of one of the members of The Bad Examples on an extremely hot afternoon in the mid 1990’s, and carried it around for years.

Ford’s process on this album included extensive pre-production. I’d already recorded all the songs as acoustic demos. Ford then produced his own home demos of his arrangements for the songs, on which he played all the instruments. He then hired the musicians and booked the studio for our sessions in Vancouver AND put me up in the house he shared with Keith Rose. And yet, he refuses to allow me to call him the producer on the album, preferring the enigmatic title of “director”.

I’d attempted “Natalie Wood said…” a couple of times before, and I love what Ford did to it, but I still feel like the song’s ultimate expression remains ahead of us. Perhaps with some future version of The Previous playing Ford’s arrangement night after night until it gels the way only a band can.

What does it all have to do with Natalie Wood? Isn’t that obvious?

Lyrics

Natalie Wood said…

There’s nothin’ much to do
aexcept to hang around half nude
by the refrigerator
thinking about food
and wondering,
“What am I doing here?”
The answer would be drinkin’
too much beer
and wondering if I’ve been too sincere with you
but Natalie Wood said…
She said it was enough for her
but now I’m really not so sure

This sure is a drinkin’ town
The cold brew flows
dark and brown and
every time I visit it I’m
scared I’m gonna drown
but that damn sun upstairs won’t ever set
and I’m allergic to my own sweat
How much more pathetic do you wanna get?
(Wanna get. Wanna really wanna get…Aah-aah)
but Natalie Wood said…
she said it was enough

enough to be sincere
but Natalie’s not here
No
Natalie Wood’s dead
She said it was enough
enough to be sincere
but Natalie’s not here…
Oh no no no
Natalie Wood said…
She said it was enough for her
but now I’m really not so sure
So sure
