yeah, yeah, yeah (I’ll Call Ya)

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah (I’ll Call Ya) with Andy Dick

Andy Shmushkin’s whole thing is he never raises his voice, except on this one song.

There’s no way the Shmushkin project happens without Willie Wisely. He gave his production chops to tracks like this one so wonderfully freely, creating the drum loops and playing most of the instruments himself, on songs like this as well as “Punkin Lovin'”, “Porn Mom”, “Christmas Cunnilingus” and “I Hate My Cell Phone Company”. These tracks make this collection of a songs a cohesive album, as opposed to a bootleg-style collection of demos and live recordings.

I’ve been a fan of Wisely’s since I heard his album “She” in the late 1990’s. That record was produced by John Fields with significant input from Mike Ruekberg who would go on to join the Shmushkin band for the big Spaceland premier and produce the demo for “Sarah Silverman”

I wrote “Yeah. Yeah, Yeah I’ll Call Ya” about being a part of Andy Dick’s entourage and while I’m sure Mike and Willie participated in the Shmushkin project out of genuine love for Shmushkin and his music, the fact he was a conduit to Dick’s entourage cast a certain brief allure I’m sure. Both Willie and Mike would go on to work with Andy even more closely than I was, for a while. Willie Wisely produced “The Darkest Day of The Year” album and did significant work on Dick’s film “Danny Roane: First Time Director” that features several of the songs I wrote with Andy like “Another Great Day For Drugs” and “Where Did I Go Wrong?” on which I somehow didn’t get credited on the film.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I’ll call ya, indeed!

I know Julia Albert who sings on this track from back in the Maxfield Rabbit days. That was her band. They were on the “As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving” compilation CD we put put on City Limits Records in the 90’s. Julia just kills it on this track! I never got the sense she had any interest in Andy Dick’s entourage.

Lyrics

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah (I’ll Call Ya)

This is my mantra
This is my prayer
I’m gonna walk on by you like you ain’t even there
You do the numbers
Baby, you do the math
but I got my eyes fixed forward and my feet on the path

I’ve been snubbed by bigger stars than you
and what we usually do
we just say…

Yeah, yeah, yeah I’ll call ya
but you know that I can’t call alla ya so
Which one of my buddies are you?
The one’s I don’t call
or the one’s I do

Not while I’m workin’ honey
Not on the job
I’m not your ordinary, nine to five, punch the clock slob
This is my day gig
and I do it well
Check out how quickly you fall under my spell
Hell…

I’ve been snubbed by bigger stars than that
and as a matter of fact
you know that

Yeah, yeah, yeah I’ll call ya
(is a song I know well)
you know we can’t call alla ya
(and that’s how you tell)
Which one of my friends are you?
The one’s I don’t call
or the one’s I do

I like to think about you waitin’ by the phone
when I’m doing something else it makes me feel less alone
I like to think about you waitin’ by the phone
when I’m doing something better like hanging with my own

You’ve been snubbed by bigger stars than me
It’s pretty easy to see that

Yeah, yeah, yeah I’ll call ya
(ain’t know stranger to you)
You know we can’t call alla ya
(So, boo-fucking-how)
Which one of my friends do you think you are?
The one on the curb
or the one in my car
Yeah, yea, yeah I’ll call ya
but ya know that I can’t call all ya
So, which one of my friends are you
the one’s I don’t call or the one’s I do
