Too Nice

When I was growing up I got some very mixed messages about being a man. Mostly from women. The youthful frustrations resulting from some of these contradictions are reflected in “Too Nice”.

Looking back, it’s not my neutering niceness the song bemoans that I regret. It’s the ways I sought to live up to the unhealthy expectations of women who rejected me with the women who didn’t. A cycle I’ve spent a good chunk of my life trying to break.

In general, my vocals on this record are more theatrical than on those that preceded it. This is the first song where that’s on full display. I had intended for “Too Nice” to be a duet but, in keeping with the spirit of the song, I could never convince the right woman to sing it with me.

Lyrics

Too Nice

“Hurt me. Hurt me”
That’s what she said.
I didn’t think she meant it but
when we got out of bed
she said, “Goodbye”
I said, “Wait a minute.
What’s wrong?
We just had the most romantic night”
She said,
“Your heart is good
Your hips are strong
but there’s just one problem
It’ll never work
’cause you’re…

Too nice
Too nice for me
You’re just
too nice
Too nice
and I’m a lady who loves misery”

I said,
“Hold on a minute you don’t know me well enough
Deep down inside
I’m really jerk”
She said,
“Ah that’s sweet of you to say
but there’s just one problem
It’ll never work
’cause your…

Too nice
Too nice for me
You’re just
too nice
Too nice
and I’m a lady who loves misery
Come on over and hurt me sometime”

So I called her names and I
broke a chair
and even threatened to slug her
but she could tell that I was insincere
and I could tell I was starting to…
“Bug me”
‘Cause I was…

Too nice
Too nice for her
I was
too nice
Too nice
She was a masochist and I was a martyr
Maybe I shoulda loved her harder
But I guess I’m just too nice
Just too nice for you
I was
too nice
Too nice
but everyday I’m gettin’ meaner
No more Mr. Weaner
No I’m
getting meaner just for you!

Too nice
Too nice for you…
