Time To Go

Having unmasked my nerdiness in “Too Nice” and my capacity for violence in “Never Tell” this song digs into the past to explore the primal experience of a fracturing family on my evolution toward a manhood which was “built in obsolete”.

The first verse is about witnessing the dissolution of my parents’ marriage. From the happiness and contentment reflected in the bridge, to the raging arguments reminiscent of the events recounted in “Never Tell”, to the day my mother and father decided it was time for him to leave our home for good. The second verse is about how my brother navigated this trauma and the last verse is about me and the survival strategies I developed in defense.

I like the band’s performance a lot on this one from Colin’s charismatic rhythm to Johnny’s hook of a guitar part and especially the tragic ambiguity of the transition from “Time To Go” to “Ring From My Finger”.

Lyrics

Time To Go

When he looked into her eyes
I could see that something was terribly wrong
but who was I to criticize
a love that was long gone
when I stood on the stair just
watching them below
and he said,
“I don’t know what time it is
but I think it’s time to go

And my brother
who was lost and found
acknowledged the fact
and then he grew resigned
I fought the battle of the mouth
while he fought the
battle of the mind
He’d finish his dinner first
although he ate so slow
and he’d say,
“I don’t know what time it is
but I think it’s time to go”

Well it’s so hard
and so frustrating
to be built in obsolete
So hard so very devastating
to be so damned incomplete
but I never felt better or more complete
than walking alone down West 10th Street
I never felt better but then I had to go

Now I’m just a very sticky thing
In a world of rubber
I’m mister superglue
don’t even bother trying
saying anything
I hate you for the
things I did to you
So when the movie starts
I whisper soft and low
I say that,
“I don’t know what time it is
but I think it’s time to…
I don’t know what time it is…
Already…time to go…”
