Olympia’s Secret

“Olympia’s Secret” was written for The Previous in 1995, making it the oldest song on the record. As the themes of Recognize, De-escalate & De-code emerged it became obvious to me that “Olympia’s Secret” should be a part of the project.

People keep asking me what Olympia’s secret is. I’m not sure it would be a good idea to divulge this information, even if I could. The truth is, the song has been with me so long that its meaning has shifted many times over the years. I can’t even tell if you if Olympia is a place, or a person, or an idea because, to me, she is all three.

When I brought this song into Sheldong Gomberg’s studio in LA, and he connected me the rhythm section of Sebastian Steinberg (bass) and Jimmy Paxson (drums), the track fell together pretty easily. They knew I was going for a Who-ish feel and I loved how Sebastian’s bass part referenced “Tears Of A Clown” for some “maximum R&B”. This foundation was the perfect playground for me and Ken Stringfellow to indulge our most Townshendesque impulses in the overdub sessions.

Lyrics

If you knew Olympia’s secret
do you think that you could keep it?
And if you knew Olympia’s secret
everything might change…

…because back when both her legs were sturdy
she never thought of herself as dirty
but now she’s only thirty two
and she’s so scared of you
and what you might do

If you knew – Olympia’s secret
If you knew – Olympia’s Secret
If you knew – Olympia’s Secret
Olympia!!!

…because if she was a famous stripper she’d
never get the same props as a dead rock singer and
if you knew Olympia’s secret
you might call her names
God, it would be so strange

If you knew – Olympia’s secret
If you knew – Olympia’s Secret
If you knew – Olympia’s Secret

If…she knew…that I was in town
well, it would probably bring her down
bring her down
but if she knew
that I’d passed right through
without even dropping in
her head would spin
Let’s go for a spin
Olympia…

If you knew – Olympia’s secret
If you knew – Olympia’s secret
Everything might change
God it would be so strange

If you knew – Olympia’s secret
If you knew – Olympia’s secret
If you knew – Olympia’s secret

Olympia
