Epic Teen (Nancy)

The “revolutionary partnership” I’m struggling with in a song like “Insecurely”, and celebrating in a song like “Spin The Bottle”, is the only kind that seemed sustainable with my life as touring musician in his twenties. The experiences and connections I had on the road, including living out many fantasies that allowed me to get past and let go of whatever made these fantasies attractive in the first place, seemed important then.

This song is a dream of a fantasy come true. I feel bad because I used the name of a real girl from my high school, meaning to change it to avoid any embarrassment or confusion, but I could never find a fake name that worked as well.

This is how the artist is a kind of criminal. The kind Bob Dylan sang about when he wrote, “to live outside the law you must be honest”. Unfortunately, honesty is often the crime, though not in this case, at least not specifically.

Lyrics

Epic Teen (Nancy)

Oh Well…
Na-ha-ha-ha-a-ancy
who wouldn’t let me kiss her
but that was a long time ago
Na-hancy
who wouldn’t let me kiss her
but that was a long time ago

I thought she was some stoic queen
but she was just a frightened teen
and now it’s time to
flip the scenery
for me
and…

Na-ha-ha-ha-a-ancy
who wouldn’t let me kiss her
but that was a long time ago
Na-ha-ancy
who wouldn’t let me kiss her
but that was a long time ago

I thought that I had blown my last chance
outside of the sophomore dance
but here I’m makin’
sweet romance with
sweet romance with Nancy!

And if she spilled half the details
it would probably seem
like some sadolescent dream
just scripted for the screen
by John Hughes
and David Lean
the epic
teen movie
co-starrin’…

Na-ha-ha-ha-a-ancy
who wouldn’t let me kiss her
but that
was a long
time
ago
A long time ago
she wouldn’t let me kiss her
Hold on Nancy
Yeah, because
that was a long time ago
