All You Get
…was originally intended as the closing track of the record and, from a purely artistic standpoint, the album probably makes more sense that way. The final goodbye from a songwriter walking away from the microphone.
But I wanted people to hear this song, so it got bumped from last to first.
…you realize that all your troubles are just luxuries unsung, so chew some scenery and have some fun…
This is just one of the lines in “All You Get” that makes it one of my favorite of my own songs. Ford Pier’s instrumental brilliance and the inimitable soul of Frazy Ford’s vocals do the song more than justice and I have to think that for anyone who likes my music this has to be one of their favorite too.
Lyrics
When your cup is full
you’re gonna still find reasons to cry
and though you pull
the wool over your eyes
you can’t deny
that…
This is what you get
Yeah maybe
this all you get
and you ain’t seen nothin’ yet
but maybe
this is all you get
Everything you want
aexcept the thing you want most
is gonna haunt
you until you
give up the ghost
and realize that…
This is all you get
Yeah maybe
this all you get (uh-huh)
and you ain’t seen nothin’ yet my pet
but maybe
this is all
you get
And when one bad night in Hollywood has ya
feelin’ like maybe you should just
jettison your dreams for good yes
that might be the smart thing just
gracefully departing
but then you…
Realize
that all your troubles are
just
luxuries unsung
and you’re the star
of your own tragedy
so chew some scenery and have some fun ‘cause…
This might be all you get (uh)
Yeah maybe
this is all you get (uh-huh)
and you ain’t seen nothing yet
Aw but
this is all you get
