A Pretty Good Judge

I wrote this song imagining Mary Lou Lord singing it.

Mary Lou and I used to play the same open mikes in the early  1990’s in Olympia. We once shared a corner busking during the Yo-Yo A Go-Go festival. Tim Armstrong from Rancid came out and played a set for our gathered throng on the corner of 5th & Washington. To be honest, the throng was all Mary Lou’s. The feeding record company frenzy vibe was intense around her in those days.

The last time I saw Mary Lou I was coming out of Fenway Park in Boston after seeing The Who with Peter Wolf and there she was, still busking, with her daughter Annabelle Lord-Patey who is now an accomplished singer-songwriter as well.

They were both on Radio8Ball a while back.

I still dream of Mary Lou singing this singing this song someday.

Lyrics

A PRETTY GOOD JUDGE

You say that I’m the best
Put me above all the rest
Well baby if that’s true
what am I doin’ hangin’ round with you?
Think about it…

I’m a pretty good judge
I like to think that I’m a pretty good judge

Don’t put me down for loving you

Now maybe our love is cursed
It wouldn’t be the first
but baby if we’re damned
Give me all the loving I can stand

I’m a pretty good judge
I’m a pretty good judge

Don’t put me down for loving you

You may not look like much
but I like to think that I’m a pretty good judge
I’m a pretty good judge
I like to think that I’m a pretty good judge

Don’t put me down for loving you
Don’t put me down for loving you
Don’t put me down for loving you
Don’t put me down for loving you
