Own Your Lips

“Own Your Lips” is about integrity, and its lack. This was the first track I worked on for “Recognize, De-escalate & De-code”.

I was in a basement next to a graveyard in Olympia, Washington with Scott Taylor and Skyler Blake of the band The Hard Way. These sessions were as much long stoned hang outs as they were industrious work on our parts, which led to the kind of musical synchronicities I’m always hoping to find. Like the entrance of Scott Taylor’s bass, which was just him noodling around while Skyler was getting tones.

The song was written in response to a synchronicity artist who gave an insightful talk about the connection between The Rolling Stones lips logo and images of the goddess Kali at a Sync Summit in New York City. Some months later this same person would play a censorious role when Daniel Pinchbeck’s online magazine Reality Sandwich refused to publish excerpts from my book (after committing to doing so) because of my use of a word beginning with C in one of the chapter titles.

When we play the victim in order to justify re-enacting our past trauma onto others, integrity goes out the window.

Lyrics

OWN YOUR LIPS

You called on Kali
Kali called you back
but you wouldn’t pick up the phone
You called on Kali
Kali called you back
but you pretended like you weren’t even home

Oooo
You got to own your lips, girl
Oooo
What you say

Now you’re the victim
and I’m the bad man
and you got control
I ain’t no victim
and you’re no bad man, girl
You’re just a filling your hole

Oooo
You got to own your lips, girl
Oooo
What you say
Oooo
You got to own your lips, girl
Oooo
What you say-hey-hey…Reality
Hey, Hey, Hey…That’s your reality
Hey, Hey, Hey…Ain’t no reality muffin
